Problem 1:

Steam flows through a well insulated turbine at the rate of 2.0 kg/s. The steam enters at 5.0 MPa, 500 C and exists at 0.5 bar. The measured power output is 1.85 MW. Calculate the isentropic efficiency of the turbine.

Problem 2:
A square duct provides fresh air to an office building. The duct is being designed so that the average air velocity is 12 m/s when the air is at 20 C and 90 kPa. if the fresh air requirement is 5.0*10^4 m^3/h (at 20 C and 90 kPa), calculate the length of one side of the duct.

Problem 3:
Cow’s milk is pasteurized by heating it to 138 C for 2 seconds in a steady flow heat exchanger. Answer the following questions by assuming that milk has the properties of pure water:
a) If 1.0 gal/min enters the exchanger at 15 C, estimate the required rate of heat transfer (kW) to the milk
b)Calculate the minimum pressure (bar, absolute) that will prevent the milk from boiling in the heat exchanger

Problem 4: The ideal rankine cycle is sketched below on a T-s diagram (I will attach a picture of the graph). The working fluid is water. Given that P1 = 10 Mpa, T1 = 600 C, and P2= 0.4 bar,
a) find the required pump power for step 3 to 4 (kj/kg)
b) Find h3 and h4 (kj/kg)

Problem 5:
The ideal vapor compression refrigeration cycle is sketched below on a T-s diagram ( i will attach the diagram ). The working fluid is r-134a and P2 = 10 bar, P1 = 1 bar.
a) find the work (wc) required to compress the refrigerant from state 1 to state 2 (Kj/kg)

b) calculate the heat lost (qout) by the condesner in going from state 2 to state 3 (kj/kg)

Problem 6:
A Carnot heat pump is being used to heat a building. Building air is circulated through a heat exchanger at the rate of 2 m^3/s (measured at 20 c and 90 kPa). Heat is supplied to the heat exchanger by the heat pump (Q.H) (the dot is on top of Q). Air enters the heat exchanger at 13 C and leaves at 27 C. If the temperature of the surroundings is 4.0 C, estimate the power (kW) required by the heat pump (W.in) (picture of the pump is attached.

for these questions, you need to use table values. the tables provided for water superheated values at 5 Mpa and 10 Mpa and saturated water table. for refrigerant also use tabulated values.
