Critical Thinking Paper
Hollywood loves a good story, and some of the most compelling stories come from people on the fringes of society. Psychopaths, drug addicts, and lunatics sell theater tickets. For the vast majority of us, this platform largely influences our perception of what these mental illnesses mean. But beyond the sensationalism of lurid tales of degenerate behavior, there have been many movies made focusing on the more mundane aspects of mental illness. In fact, so many movies have been made with disorders as a theme, that it nearly impossible to count.
Assignment Select one character from film or television that you believe meets the criteria for a psychological disorder discussed in your textbook (character need not be actually diagnosed). In three to four pages, clearly explain your position as to why they fit the criteria for the disorder, using evidence from the film/show to prove your position.
You will be graded according to your ability to thoughtfully demonstrate your knowledge of the chosen psychological disorder, your ability to accurately identify psychological symptoms in your chosen character, and evidence of critically engaging in the material to support your position.
Questions that can help guide you in making sure you are thinking critically are:
1. What makes this person a “good” example of the psychological disorder?
2. How, if at all, does the character deviate from the true disorder?
3. Does the diathesis-stress model support your position?
4. How does culture or situation account for any of the character’s symptomatology?
5. Does genetics or family history account for any part of the character’s presentation?
The questions above can serve as a guide to engaging in critical thought; however, please write a cohesive argument, do not simply answer the questions.
Due: Printed copy, in class, April 22nd. Two points will be lost for each day the paper is late.
