QUESTION 1
1. Communicating to shape identity
Everyone reveals and hides parts of themselves in communication. We do this because of who we feel we are and how we want to be perceived by others. But we also change what we reveal and hide as we move from one social context to another. Describe a situation where you changed what you communicated about yourself. Did it work? Did others perceive you as you wanted to be perceived? What was it that led you to be successful or unsuccessful in your communication?

2. Naming
One of the most powerful speech-acts is to name something. Every year in Newfoundland locals go out and kill baby seals and skin them for their pelts. Is this event an “annual seal harvest” (Canadian government) or a “baby-seal slaughter” (Greenpeace)? Who gets to decide and what happens to public discourse based on the definition? Can you describe a situation where you disagreed with another person or an agency regarding the definition of the situation or event? What difference did the definition make? Who “won” the disagreement? What impact did that have on the outcome of the event?

INSTRUCTION.
Each response short essay MUST make a properly cited reference to an idea taken from the course readings and should provide one example from the contemporary world to support your position. You must also have a source reference if you refer to any material which is neither common knowledge nor personal experience. (An essay that does clearly reference a course reading will receive no mark.)
Each essay must be structured as follows:
A short introduction (3-5 sentences)
Three to five paragraphs that provide support or evidence for the position taken.
o Start with a topic sentence
o Have 3-5 sentences of supporting evidence or examples
o May have a concluding or summarizing sentence
o One of those paragraphs MUST identify and explain a relevant course textbook concept with appropriate reference.
o One of those paragraphs should identify and explain a real world supporting example.
A conclusion that summarizes the argument and may extrapolate briefly regarding other implications.
Each essay is worth 6% of your course mark.
