D.B. Engineering Company is a traditional engineering firm based in the Midlands. It was founded in
the 60’s and the newly appointed CEO, Suzie Singh, has created a new HR Manager role and has
appointed Steve Davies to support the future plans of D.B. Engineering. There has been little formal
HR practice to date in the organisation beyond payroll, and legal administration such as contracts
and holidays. Suzie sees the consequences of not driving people management issues as very serious
for the business and fully supports the new HRM role. D.B Engineering is an SME and employs around 200 full time staff in total. Current employees are
long serving and the front-line staff are very skilled engineers, many of them are reaching retirement
age. They are mainly white, British men. They are all hard working and established within their roles.
The firm team feels like a family who work together and not a staff team, which is often real
strength. Changes in engineering technology are not readily embraced however and the workforce is
perhaps resistant to changes; it prides itself in traditional practices and has a reputation for quality
products and great service. It is currently not unionised but there are some strong characters who
are very outspoken and can make life difficult for Management if they don’t agree with something,
perhaps partially explaining the lack of diversity and failure to embrace new working practices.
Management are normally internal appointments from the long-term members of staff and have no
formal management training or wider experience beyond their roles. D.B. Engineering has a small
support team of administrators working in the offices, who deal mainly with finance and general
admin issues. New employees are often recruited by word of mouth and are frequently friends and relations of
existing employees. Training is all on-the-job and learning is by experience rather than through any
formal qualifications or off-the-job training programmes being used. There are opportunities to
introduce changes and improve HR practices in these key areas. Suzie Singh recruited D.B. Engineering’s first ever HR Manager role and is keen to support Steve in
making changes. She is recognised as the first woman in a leadership role ever at D.B. Engineering,
and has been chosen for her vision and expertise. She is a qualified engineer herself, very unusual in
this sector and is well liked and respected by the team. She is a real catch for the business and one
they expect great results from to secure the business for future generations.
The changes the CEO would like Steve Davies to drive through are:
•
•
•
•
• Ensuring existing knowledge and skills are retained when long term members retire
Making the workforce more diverse
Create a career path for unqualified employees
Upskilling the workforce with new engineering technology, which is specialist knowledge
A reduction in costs of workforce payroll, pensions and benefits of 10% in the next 12-24
months. BPP University Business School Suzie is very insistent that D.B. Engineering keeps its ‘family feel’ during all of these changes but she
also indicates further cuts in payroll and staff benefits may need to be taken in the future in order to
keep the business viable given the unknown outcome of BREXIT negotiations and UK markets
uncertainty. Business plans are to grow over the next few years despite uncertain markets and also
to adopt new technologies and ways of working, so Suzie feels the changes she suggests are
priorities.
