“The essay, if you choose to write it, should be 5 pages long, and must be on a topic that involves both business and ethics in a significant way. (A “page” means a full double-spaced page with no more than 1-inch margins and a 12 point font. Going over 5 pages is OK, but you should avoid going much under 5.

Grading Criteria:
(A)The quality of the essay’s content. (How well the paper demonstrates an understanding of the ethical and business issues discussed, and the quality of the analysis, argument, or research included in the essay).
(b) The originality of the essay. (The extent to which the essay represents your own intellectual activity, as opposed to simply paraphrasing someone else’s ideas, arguments, or research.)
(c) The quality of the writing. (The extent to which your essay demonstrates college-level written communication skills. An essay that displays extremely poor grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc., will not earn a passing grade.)
Topics and Format: The paper must deal in a substantial way with some moral issue relating to business. Some topics will be suggested as the course progresses. Other topics should be discussed with me ahead of time. Several different types of paper will be acceptable (more information about acceptable paper topics and genres will be posted on the course Blackboard page under “course information”):
1. An extended case study of an incident or issue in the business world with an important and interesting moral dimension (for example, the Enron/Arthur Anderson scandal, the Ford-Firestone scandal, the business practices of Microsoft, the university bookstore [are they price gouging?], and the local gas stations [are they price-fixing?]).
2. A persuasive/argumentative paper that argues for a specific position on some controversial moral or public policy issue relating to business (such as the extent of the social responsibility of business, whether insider trading should be legalized, etc.).
3. A traditional research paper that explores the legal, historical, or business background of some ethical or legal issue discussed in the course (for example: a detailed exploration of the SEC rules on insider trading, a discussion of the regulations governing the accounting profession, a survey of corporate codes of ethics, a survey of approaches to defining conflicts of interest). Remember: A college research paper should do more than simply report on a few hours of casual web surfing. A good research paper uses the results of careful research to answer a question or support a claim.”
