Embedded Systems Applications
Car Park Controller
Assessment Details:
The purpose of this exercise is to design a control system for a 23 space car park. You will design and test a microcontroller application for an automatic parking control system.
Problem:
The system is to provide a means of monitoring available spaces in the car park and provide an indicator of occupancy by an illuminated display sign and operating gate bars at the entrance and exit.
Tasks:
Design the control circuit and simulate using the easy8051B development boards.
• The entrance/exit sensors will produce a logic “1″ output when the beam is broken. The payment check is just a logic one input from another device.
• Use a standard 2 x 16 character display to show detailed occupancy information at the entrance and to give other information to traffic entering the car park. You may decide what information to give or not to give.
• The single gate will be operated by a stepper motor. You system should provide the 4 bits to directly drive the motor up and down for an angle of 90o. Assume the stepper motor has a step size of 1.5o.
• Develop a solution to be written in mikroC and fully commented.
• Develop a test strategy to ensure the program meets fully with the design specification
• Make reasonable assumptions where specification is not clear
• An Emergency Override switch should be capable of interrupting system operation, causing all lights to go to red and the gate to fully open. This state should remain until the switch is operator again.
• Where you have ‘added’ value to the design, due credit will be given
The connection of inputs and outputs will be given on a separate sheet.
Assessment Criteria:
You should present a report on the development of your solution with certain key elements
1. Clear description of the methodology you are using to implement the system. A flow chart or Pseudo English or similar description of the way in which you are solving the problem.
2. A clear well documented program which follows a logical process and is based on the solution in Section 1.
3. The testing strategy should be clear.
4. An evaluation of the design in terms of areas of weakness and possible improvements which could be built in.
The working solution should be demonstrated to the Module Leader.
The assessment will be marked as follows:
Presentation of Report 15%
Development of Solution 30%
Design of Program 30%
Evaluation and Analysis 20%
Demonstration of Program 5%
