Write a paper about a historical person (the one you’ve been working on).
The paper should concentrate just a small portion on the person’s biography and spend more time and effort on why the person and his/her life is significant in History. What is the historical context the person operated in? How did that person respond to or affect that context?
Checklist for a good paper (rubric)
1. 5-6 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins, MLA citation format, written in the third person
2. Works cited page, MLA format
3. Introductory paragraph that includes a thesis statement and lays out the blueprint or scheme of your paper.
4. Paper follows the organization and scheme you’ve laid out in the introduction.
5. Subtopics support your thesis. For example, if you’re teaching me that Elizabeth Blackwell was amazing for her accomplishments and her time, then you better be telling me about her accomplishments and the time period in which she lived.
6. Content includes specific information, such as specific numbers and data. I don’t want a rewrite of a very general web page! Remember this helpful advice, always write at least one more sentence per each paragraph you compose. That last sentence will usually either contain more specific and helpful information or really “nail” the point you are trying to make in that paragraph. Content is almost everything.
7. In the conclusion, you are allowed to express some personal opinion about what you’ve learned, but then wrap up the project by basically re stating the main point.
8. Grammar/Spelling/Passive voice: I expect no spelling errors, with spell check on your Word programs, there is no excuse. I also expect you to hand in a finished product that has been edited for grammar. Try not to use too much passive voice. Instead of “The man was bitten by the snake,” write ” The snake bit the man.”
