Hi Folks,
I have attached the revised workshop document to reflect what we did yesterday
– discuss the WBS rather than attempt to complete an estimate. I plan
to extend the exercise into to include effort and schedule on Day 3
& 4.
Further to the assignment, Please include the following parts:
·
A list of the assumptions that you are using. This provides context for
the project. Typically, a WBS is accompanied by a list of assumptions
to avoid confusion and potential gaps/overlaps between projects running
in parallel – e.g. there may be another project responsible for moving
existing furniture to the new offices.
· Part 1 – The WBS items only Example:
· 1 House
o 1.1 Foundation
o 1.2 Floor
o 1.3 Walls
o 1.4 Roof
· 2 Garage
· Part 2 – The WBS items (black) with Activities (blue)
· 1 House
o 1.1 Foundation
§ Dig hole
§ Set forms
§ Pour Concrete
§ Remove Forms
o 1.2 Floor
§ Etc.
o 1.3 Walls
§ Etc.
o 1.4 Roof
§ Etc.
· 2 Garage
o Etc.
·
A paragraph or two that describes your approach to completing the
project – e.g. a short narrative of how the WBS items and activities
would be sequenced from start to end.
Hope this is clear. You are not required to estimate the start-end, or work of the activities – we will do this in Day 3 & 4

Day 2 Workshop: Creating a Work Breakdown Structure
(Revised Oct 28, 2013)
Your company (100 employees) is moving to a new location as a result of recent growth. You are responsible for moving all computing equipment (network/servers/cabling/workstations) to the new offices located 20 km from the existing offices.
Assuming the company is moving to an existing building with existing walls:
Create a work breakdown structure (WBS) that describes the deliverables associated with the project; and
Create an Activity List that outlines the major activities required to plan, transfer, and install existing computer equipment in the new location.
What assumptions did you make? (Be creative)
Reflection:
Would you be able to easily track the completion of each WBS item as the project progresses from start to end?
What external factors may cause the WBS to change?
What impact would resource leveling, risk management activities, or procurement decisions have on your WBS?
How would you present the WBS to your Sponsor?
How did you work together as a team when creating the WBS?
