Scientific research benefits from numerous components, including rigor through the scientific method, objectivity through impartial sources, and extensive peer-review of research by experts before publication, that give its conclusions greater credence in society. However, scientific research usually ends up published in peer-reviewed journals that have relatively limited access and are written in the technical language of their respective fields. In order to tap into this knowledge, one must learn how to sort through technical writing to find the relevant parts and interpret the statistics.
Use the student support site http://www.sagepub.com/salkind5e/study/articles.htm to select one of the journal articles from SAGE publications to review for this assignment. You are free to select any article from the list online, but the article must contain at least 2 of the following for you to use it:
· Measures of central tendency and variability (most articles will have these)
· Graphical analyses (any chart or graph will do)
· Some use of inferential statistics (Correlation, ANOVA, Regression, Factor Analysis)
Your review should include the following:
· Review of the research questions the article proposes to study.
· Review of the findings and conclusions of the article.
· Lists the variables used in the study.
· Lists the measures and values of central tendency and variability reported in the study.
o You will often find the variables and measures of central tendency/variability listed in a single table in an article. You are free to replicate them here, though you must indicate which table you are referencing in the article.
· Assess the graphical analyses used in the article. What are the graphics used? What do they display?
· Assess the inferential statistics used in the article. What statistics were used? What were the results?
It is unlikely that you are at a level of expertise where you can easily digest the entirety of a particular quantitative academic journal article. (Welcome to the club, we’re happy to have you.) To practice good previewing and summarizing skills, begin by reading the following components of the article:
· Abstract
· Introduction
· Conclusion section
After that, work backwards to reviewing the discussion section (if need be), then look at the statistics in the article. There were usually be a data/methodology section to help you with names of procedures, lists of variables, etc as well.
