Leadership Assignment
Step 1: Interview the leader in order to ascertain the following:
1. What is the leader’s definition of leadership?
2. What are the leader’s personal leadership values and principles?
3. What is the leader’s dominant orientation of motivation?
4. How does the leader’s definition of ethics influence their model of leadership?
Step 2: Use the following questions to get relevant information during the interview.
Life’s Story
Leadership Definition
Leadership Values and Principles**
Motivation
How did you get to be where you are?
What is your definition of leadership?
What values are essential in good
leadership? What does it take to make a good
leader? What should a leader NOT do? How
does your definition of ethics influence you
model of leadership?
What are the biggest reasons people behave the
way they do in your organization (firm, team)?
On a 100 point scale, how much do you think
people behave for explicit rewards (such as
salary, promotion, etc.) and how much do they
behave for their own reasons? Do you provide
rewards that continually adapt to people’s needs
in order to keep them motivated? If yes, what
do you do or focus on?
**Note: Some people may have a difficult time providing separate and direct answers for
the Leadership Values and Principles questions. While this is understandable, if this
happens, present the questions as if you were a teacher – encourage and listen carefully to
the person during the interview.
Step 3: Prepare a 5-6 page final report (typed, 1.5 line-spaced) of the interview that
provides the following information about the leader your team interviewed:
1. What is the leader’s definition of leadership?
2. What are the leader’s personal leadership values and principles?
3. What is the leader’s dominant orientation of motivation?
4. How does the leader’s definition of ethics influence their leadership values and
principles?
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
Your team will invest a fair amount of time and energy studying the results from these
interviews, so please select the interviewees wisely and interview them well before Delivery 4
due date.
