The U.S. government has created a piece of legislation, theIndian Healthcare Improvement Act (IHCIA), which directly links toand addresses the issue of government responsibility for NativeAmerican healthcare. The IHCIA legislation aims to improve accessand delivery of healthcare to Native Americans, using modernizedtechnology for advancement. Also included is long-term care for theelderly, behavioral and mental health, and acute care. Recently,the U.S. Senate approved the amendment to this legislation, calledthe Indian Health Care Improvement Reauthorization Bill, SB 1200.The amendment will make updated changes to the original IHCIAlegislation to uphold the federal governmentâs obligations ofhonoring Native Americansâ health and welfare. Moreover, theamendment addresses diabetes, youth suicide, and drug addictionwhich are rampant on reservations, along with preventative care,and retaining health professionals on native lands.
