For your first paper, you will be conducting a literary analysis of The Spirit of the Beehive, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, or both. This assignment encourages you to think about how and why these works were produced. To successfully analyze, you’ll need to remember that authors make specific choices for particular reasons. Your essay should point out the author’s choices and attempt to explain their significance. Another way to look at a literary analysis is to consider a piece of literature from your own perspective.What arguments do these fictional narratives make about censorship? Where do you see the effects of censorship on the artist? Where do you see J.M. Coetzee’s ideas about “the censor” echoed or modulated in these texts? Which literary elements (theme, figurative language, use of color, narrative voice, etc) or rhetorical devices (logos, ethos, pathos) are employed by the authors to persuade us? How are the works’ relationships to the censor/censorship different? What elements do they share? You should include quotations from the text to support your argument.
