I. This paper should be based on your reading of Wealth and Power, the text written by
Orville Schell and John Delury. It should serve as your crowning demonstration of your
understanding of, and insight into, various figures who contributed to the unfolding of Modern
Chinese history. As such, it should be written with care, thoughtfulness, and cogency.
II. You may select one, or a combination of several, figure(s) studied in the text to
discuss his/her/their role in shaping Modern China’s search for wealth and power. Pick one (or
several) who intrigues or interests you the most, and write a coherent and interpretative essay on
him/her/them.
III. Your essay must not be a mere conglomeration of facts and dates. It should not be
mainly descriptive or narrative in nature. Rather, it should be analaytical and argumentative, in
the sense that you have a particular take on the person(s), or a particular way of understanding
these individuals. In other words, it should have a central argument or point of view on which
you base your discussion. It should have a specific perspective on the person(s) you have chosen
to address. It should use dates and statistics sparingly and judiciously.
IV. Your essay will be evaluated for content, coherence of argument, style, and grammar.

both 3rd editions. the other two sources just need to be refereed publications.
