As you’ve noticed by now, lots of jazz musicians had nicknames, but few embraced theirs in the way that Charlie Parker did. He wrote more than a dozen tunes that had bird-related titles, and a few friends wrote “bird songs” for him as well. For this expansion topic, I’ve selected ten; some, like “Ornithology” and “Yardbird Suite,” have become jazz standards; others are deep cuts that are rarely heard today. Listen to each of the items in the folder, and write a 300 word blog post response. Possible approaches include:
• Compare and contrast at least three of the examples.
• Comment at length on two or more of the examples, and explain what you like and don’t like about each. Be as detailed as possible and try to use as much musical terminology as you can.
• Do some web research and find an alternate version of one or more of these tracks (try YouTube); it may have been recorded more than once, or you might discover one or more live performances. Compare it/them to the version included here. How do they differ, and what elements are the same?
• Prepare a listening guide for one of these songs, describing the instrumentation, tempo, form, characteristics, form, changes of texture, and significant musical events. With a little research, you might be able to discover something about its creation.
• Which of these songs do you like the most, and which do you not care for? Explain your reasons in detail.
