Policy Brief/White Paper Assignment
Policymakers are consistently bombarded with information; however, they often do not have time to read each technical report in detail. Many research and practitioners rely on policy briefs to gain information on an important topic.
The goal of this assignment is to design a 2-4 page policy brief on your chosen paper topic. The brief should be factual in nature, but the goal is to ‘sell the study’ to the selected audience. The most successful briefs will outline the statement of problem, provide important facts about the intervention, and provide an argument of the efficacy of the program model. The policy brief should be visually appealing. Students are more than welcome to use Microsoft Publisher for the assignment. Bullets can also be used in this type of document, but use them sparingly. You do not need to cite all of the references you will include in your final paper, but the document should include links to the most salient works in the area. The assignment is worth 20 points.

Elements of a Project Brief
Statement of the Problem:
· Why is your study/program needed?
· Include specific statistics that draw the reader in. For example, you may want to cite the high number of drug related deaths, car thefts, or juvenile arrests in the past 5 years. Be specific. Graphics can be used if they do not take away from the message of the document.
Program Model:
· Describe your program.
o All statements should be clear, concise and factual.
o For example, the goal of this document is to highlight the need for drug courts in St. Louis.
o Or, I propose the extension of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program to incarcerated parents.
Evidence:
· Why do you think that this program will work?
o Has this program been highlighted by other scholars as ‘evidenced based’?
· Please provide evidence from past studies or theoretical research to highlight the need and potential efficacy of the project.
Conclusion:
· Summarize the findings of your research.
o For example, I find that the Big Brothers program is needed in prison because 800,000 children have incarcerated parents.
· Make detailed recommendations for policy – if appropriate.
· Identify new directions for policy and research.
· Finally, encourage practitioners to adapt your model.
