“Knock-Out Mice” lacking the ATP-ADP translocase gene
(ANT-/ANT-) are viable but feature the following phenotype:
Lethargic,
High serum levels of alanine, lactate and succinate,
Little electron transport,
A six- to eight-fold increase in mitochondrial hydrogen peroxide
(H2O2) compared with normal mice.
Provide a plausible biochemical explanation for these
observations!
