Normal No spacing LHeading Metabolic Calculations Purpose This lab is to demonstrate the ability and the required skill to determine Vo2 levels at given workloads in relative and absolute measures, MET levels, and kcal expenditure and other Material For this lab you will need each of the following: Metabolic Equations Formulas Metabolic equations serve two purposes for exercise professionals. The first is to calculate oxygen consumption, which allows you to determine caloric expenditure for a specific activity and duration. The second enables you to determine a target workload specific to the goals and needs. The enery expenditure can be of significant concerm to those who are beginning an exercise program. A good understanding of how the body utilizes energy for physical activity can limit an individual’s unrealistic expectations about weight loss. You can use several methods to determine target workload intensity for exercise prescription. ACSM’s guidelines recommend using %VO2 reserve (%VO2 R) instead of %vo2. This is because evidence-based research has demonstrated that %vo2R corresponds with %HR reserve closely than does a direct porcentage of VO2max. HRR accounts for the effect of varying resting HR levels from one person to the next and the impact of resting determining exercise intensity. To calculate %HRR and %VO2R, the resting measure of these variables (RHR and 3.5 ml/kgmin, respectively) is subtracted from the maximal levels of these variables, then the target 5% is calculated from this difference, and finally the resting measure is added back. These two methods provide reliable and relatively accurate measures of exercise intensity. Note that RPE can be a useful tool in identifying a workload that is comfortable for the client. According to the ACSM’s guidelines, clients who are taking a medication that can alter HR or those who have difficulty palpitating HR. RPE can be helpful in providing a cue for determining exercise intensity. The following are the equations for %HRR and %VO2R.
