A rhetorical analysis is exactly what its name suggests—an analysis of a text’s rhetoric. The term “rhetoric” refers to the various choices and strategies a writer has employed in his/her text to persuade his/her readers to adopt a particular idea or take a specific action. These choices and strategies include but are not limited to:
– word choice – compare/contrast
– symbolism – use of emotions
– use of statistics – use of graphs or charts
– repetition – use of celebrity
– color – visuals
and more!
While there are several different types of rhetorical analysis, the type we will focus on is classical rhetorical analysis, or Aristotelian analysis. In this type of analysis, you look at a text purely for its persuasive effects on an audience and the overall probable success or failure of those effects. Its’ purpose is to evaluate a texts’ argument. We will be using the CAAP (context, author, audience, and purpose) elements talked about in class to outline this analysis, and then fill in the supporting details.

(left) MLA header (right) page number

? An introduction that names the text and its author, gives a brief summary of the text, and presents your thesis/claim. The last sentence in your introduction is your THESIS.
————————————————————————————————————
THESIS Example:
Who + did what + why = general thesis
Cameron Crowe uses multiple rhetorical strategies
to convince people that looks are not everything.
————————————————————————————————————
? A second paragraph that describes the text’s rhetorical situation (CAAP: context, audience, author, purpose).
? Several body paragraphs identifying and analyzing strategies used in the text. Do not try to cover all the strategies you see—that could take up a whole book. Instead, select two to three strategies that you see as the main contributors to the text’s overall effect that you are examining. Be sure to spend some time analyzing IF the strategy was effective or not. The first sentence in your body paragraphs should be the P in PIE, the topic sentence. It should have WHO + used what strategy + why.
Strong topic sentence example: Katy Perry uses color to good affect to let her fans feel like because they like her music they are automatically hip, energetic and fashionable.
Weak example: I think that Katy Perry did not use color well. I don’t like the color pink so this was an annoying color to see when I was trying to read her tweets.
Analyze one strategy in 1-2 paragraphs.
In these paragraphs, you will need to describe/illustrate (the I in PIE) the visual element from the “text” to provide examples of the effects you see. Don’t assume that your readers can see the same things that you see—briefly show them what you are looking at before focusing on analyzing strategies. Remember that you want to show HOW the text effects and appeals to its’ target audience and evaluate WHY each strategy is effective or not.
Every BODY paragraph should have …
P=point=topic sentence. 1 sentence previewing the main idea of the PARAGRAPH.
I=illustration. 2-3 sentences SHOWing us where to look in your ad/Twitter account.
E=explanation. This is where the HOW and WHY of your rhetorical analysis is. Your job is to explain WHY the author made the rhetorical choices that they did.
In one body paragraph, you can have ANY one of these three PIE structures:
P P P
I or I or I
E I E
E I
E
No matter which you choose, SHOW (I) your reader before you EXPLAIN the rhetorical choices. IE, I (illustration) before E (explanation)….ALWAYS!!!
? A conclusion that summarizes the overall effect of the text and brings you back to your thesis.
Details:
Your final essay should be
? Arial 12 font
? Double spaced
? Utilizes PIE body paragraphs
? Follow MLA format as shown in “Rules for Writers” (including a “Works Cited page”)
? Edited for spelling, grammar and punctuation issues
? Have clear, focused paragraphs
? MS Word or the equivalent (no PDFs please)
? 3-4 pages (A page is a page, 2-½ pages does NOT equal 3 pages. Thus, write to the bottom of the page.)
