Introduction:
One of the purposes of a professional practice experience is to observe a healthcare organization in its daily activities. The purpose of this first professional practice is to give you hands-on experience not only in managing health information but also in becoming acclimated to the organizational culture and observing healthcare operations in their clinical, administrative, and supportive functions.
Task:
A. Create a diagram in which you include the following:
1. How policies and processes in the health information management department (or your assigned department) correspond with government regulations or accreditation standards
2. The similarities you observed between a specific organizational policy and an external regulation or standard in your assigned department
3. A description of two of the external accreditation, certification, or licensing agencies to which the organization reports
B. Discuss changes made in organizational processes based on the recommendations from the latest survey and accreditation visit.
1. Summarize the latest report and recommendations from the organization’s accrediting agency.
Note: There may be too many recommendations to list in detail. Read through them and list examples highlighting the emphasis of the report.
2. Discuss how these changes impacted staff or workflow. (Your clinical preceptor can direct you to who would have this information.)
C. Discuss quality improvement (QI) processes or programs in place in the health information management department or in other departments in the organization.
1. Provide two examples of quality initiatives currently in place, including responsible parties.
2. Discuss whether the process is working.
3. Provide two suggestions you would have as a team member if you were participating on the QI team.
D. Analyze the organization’s process for storing and disposing of the health record by doing the following:
1. Explain how the organizational process complies with the HIPAA Privacy Rule and HIPAA Security Rule.
2. Explain how the organizational process meets state guidelines for retention and disposal.
E. When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
