Module 1 discussion
There are many theories regarding the root causes of civil
unrest and distrust of police. What do you feel are the primary causes of such
turmoil? Is it simply human nature to question authority or is it usually based
upon an action or inaction of that authority? Please be specific in your
response and back up your stance with an effective argument.
Module 2 discussion
Certainly you have learned, by this time in your academic
career, that Wikipedia should never be utilized as a source. Why is this not a
good source? Can Wikipedia contain scholarly and legitimate information and
research? Is there any way in which Wikipedia can assist you in your research
endeavors? Please elaborate on your responses and provide examples.
Module 3 discussion
Locate a scholarly article regarding police liability.
Summarize the article and formulate it into an annotated bibliography, paying
careful attention to proper APA formatting. In your responses to your peers,
discuss how their chosen article relates to something you covered in one of
your prior criminal justice courses.
Module 4 discussion
After being interrogated relentlessly for many hours, four
U.S. Navy sailors separately confessed to committing a violent rape and murder
despite the lack of any evidence linking them to the crime. Based on their
confessions, and despite there being no DNA match at the crime scene, each of
the men was sent to prison for the crimes. In video Chapter 3 from The
Confessions, students will consider why someone would give a false confession
and examine the different types of evidence that can be used to identify
perpetrators of a crime.
For this discussion:
First, go to
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-confessions/
Then in the player for the video, go to the marker for
Chapter 3, “And Still No DNA Match…” (length:13:20)
Watch the video and consider the issues regarding false
confessions that are raised.
Finally, for your initial response, answer the following
question: “Why would someone confess to something they did not do? How can the
criminal justice system protect against false confessions?”
Module 5 discussion
The previous activity had you work as a CSI investor to
solve a number of cases. Let’s take some time as a group to evaluate that
experience.
For this discussion:
First, make sure you participated in solving the cases at:
http://forensics.rice.edu/
Then for your initial response, answer the following prompt:
“Regarding the CSI simulation, discuss what you experienced and provide a
substantive critique of what worked well and what needs to be improved.”
Module 6 discussion
We have discussed how effective citizen advisory councils
can be for building mutual trust. Not all successful chiefs of police buy into
the concept, however. They complain that they do not want bickering, and at
times, hostile members of the public dictating police policy. What would you
tell those chiefs in order to convince them to utilize this trust building
technique?
Module 7 discussion
Please post a draft of your formal presentation. Carefully
review your classmate’s postings and formulate and post critical questions as
needed in order to insure that their recommendations and conclusions fit within
the parameters of best practices in policing.
Module 8 discussion
At the beginning of this course you were asked to choose
from three possible tracks in order to make your impact on Courtelaney Pass.
Which track did you choose and what impacted your decision to choose that
particular discipline? Also, please post your Executive Summary to the
discussion board so that your fellow students may review and comment upon it.
Research
Identification Assignment
After carefully reading and studying the complete
situational report, contemplate which of the three roles/tracks you wish to
assume for your term project.
In this module, you have reviewed a great example of an
issues paper. Now you are to construct one based upon at least six issues that
you have identified from the situational report. You will be attacking these
issues from the position of an attorney, a police administrator, or a criminal
investigator, so choose issues wherein your chosen discipline will be required.
For instance, the criminal investigator would not choose to deal with the
legality of an alleged speed trap or intersection cameras. Also, in your issues
paper, address the type of research (library, Lexus-Nexus, other online
sources, textbooks, etc.) you plan to undertake to inform your positions.
Annotated
Bibliography Assignment
Just as you practiced this discipline in your discussion
post, create a bibliography with ten (10) annotations. These annotations should
be specific to the research you are doing for your class project in your chosen
discipline: administration-leadership, legal, or criminal investigations. As we
have mentioned throughout this module, pay particular attention to proper APA
formatting.
Literature Review
Assignment
Now it the time to start showing the heavy lifting you are
doing for your project. You will submit a 500-word literature review based from
the annotated bibliography that identifies the theoretical integration and
application of information of your chosen track. Remember, as we have mentioned
throughout this course, pay particular attention to proper APA formatting.
Executive Briefing
Summary Assignment
Now, here is your opportunity to communicate concisely
through a very focused executive briefing to the governor. Remember what you
learned in this module about what happened, why it happened, what was the
outcome, what you have done, and, what you still need to do. Remember also that
you have creative license in this course. That means you can add to, but not
delete from, your situational report – so be creative. Also be aware that your
creativity must be in line with proper police procedure and current law.
You will submit a 500-word executive briefing encompassing
all of the items mentioned in the above paragraph. Remember, as we have
mentioned throughout this course, pay particular attention to proper APA
formatting.
Formal Presentation
Assignment
Students will present their final and complete findings,
actions, and future solutions/recommendations to the situational report they
have chosen.
Please remember that you should employ ‘speaker notes’ which
will represent what you would say while presenting. Do not simply utilize
slides with bullet points and no explanation of those points. Also, this is a
professional presentation so color schemes, graphics, transitions, photos,
etc., are strongly encouraged. Remember, as we have mentioned throughout this
course, pay particular attention to proper APA formatting.
