Stability analysis of rectangular plates

1 Stability of Engineering Structures Spring 2013 Project 3 Subject: Stability analysis of rectangular plates. In this project we consider collapse of plates due to in-plane loading. We analyze three problems: buckling of biaxially compressed plates, response of biaxially compressed plates in the presence of initial imperfections, and design of stringer-reinforced plates subject to compression. Applications: The following examples depict a few problems where plates can be subject to compression as a result of thermal or mechanical loading. F-22 Raptor Plated surfaces are clearly observed in the tail and wing structures. The load on these surfaces is mostly thermal (aerodynamic heating) and air pressure. Additionally, in-plane load may be applied dependent on the design particulars (e.g., bending of the wing causes compression in the plates of its lower surface). http://www.globalaircraft.org
2 Excess of weight over buoyancy Excess of buoyancy over weight Ship supported by two waves (bow and stern) Ship on top of the wave at midsection The deck is compressed. The bottom is compressed. Plate Girder bridges are the most common type of railroad bridge in North America. Plate structures are clearly visible. The vertical girder plates are subject to a combination of bending and in-plane shear stresses that can cause buckling. From: https://www.exactrail.com/30-deck-plate-girder-bridge-cable-handrails-black. Aircraft carrier “Ronald Reagan”. Every ship represents a nonuniform beam supported by buoyancy forces. The local difference between weight and buoyancy at various cross sections causes bending moment. This moment results in compression applied to the plates of bottom or deck as shown below. Accordingly, buckling problems are very important in design of ship plates. http://www.navsource.org
