General Environment Paper The analysis that supports the strategic planning is a critical first step in the strategic planning process. One of the ongoing steps in strategic analysis is to engage in environmental scanning. Environmental scanning is our attempt to identify and monitor trends and events that have the potential to affect our business positively or negatively. We hope to be able to predict the impact of these trends quickly and accurately in order to proactively deal with them hopefully before our competitors do! For this paper, you are to analyze the 6 segments of the general environment and identify current trends &/or events that have the potential to impact businesses. The industry that you will use for the monitoring and scanning is the TV Program Production & Distribution industry. I want you to consider all of the segments of the environment for the industry; however I want you to focus on only one or two of the segments for a detailed discussion. In other words, for the segments you are briefly discussing (a paragraph) you should discuss what it is about the segment that makes it important to the industry. For the segments you are using for your focus (the majority of your 4 pages) you should identify specific trends that SHOULD be monitored (the scanning portion) – be sure to fully explain why it is important – and/or trends that are already having an impact (very early phases NOT something that has been going on for years already) and again fully explain why it is important. You should tell me what the trend/event is, why it is important, and how it could positively or negatively affect business. You will use Chapter 2, especially beginning with page 47, as your guide.
