Human resource management has evolved throughout the years from only dealing with employee regulations such as safety and compensation to being a very important part of the success of any company (Editorial Board, 2013). Human resource management is now responsible for not only addressing concerns of safety and compensation but also to ensure that wages and working conditions do not interfere with employee productivity. This means that if employees have concerns about unfair wages or dangerous work environments, HR management will take care of any problems. There are different professional disciplines within the human resource profession and the one that will be discussed in this post is the discipline of employee relations.
All of the disciplines within the human resource profession are equally valuable to keeping a company’s human capital at optimal performance. However, to me the discipline of employee relations is a discipline that I could see myself in one day. Employee relations involve motivating employees to maintain productivity, to keep morale within the company high, and most importantly, develop a good employee-employer relationship (Editorial Board, 2013). If any issues regarding performance issues, disputes, discrimination, etc. this discipline will strive to prevent and correct these problems.
Employee relations began to take form in the 50’s under the name of industrial relations (Lyddon, 1996). It wasn’t until the early 80’s that it was changed to employee relations because this was a popular time for strikes and company’s wanted to keep their employees from going on strike so they used the employee relations discipline to keep their employees. This tactic worked because over time, human resources became a mediator between the employees and the employers and helped both sides of the company (Lyddon, 1996).
