Individual Student NeedsMarikaPáez So what are you look… going to be looking for in termsof individual students, I know you have some kids who…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Right, um…
MarikaPáez …and might be look. During theplanning process students individual needs are taken into account along with those of the whole class…When do you think is the moment where your readers on the edge of your seat… I will goaround from student to student working with them one on one with whatever their stories need. Did this really happen? It really happened… I want to check in with Erin and Evan about theirtopics, because they seem to making up a lot of their stories lately. And I want to encourage them to writethings from the own lives and lets see what you got. On SundayI was going up state and we had to take a tree, then the treegot into a tunnel it stuck. And I said to myself, where is this train going to…go…
MarikaPáez …go, wow. You’re trying the mini lesson that I taught today. You’re trying to watch out that moment.
Hmm… hmm…MarikaPáez …when you’re waiting… waiting for the train… sometimes what writers do as they, they go back and they addstuff inside their stories not just to the end of their stories, but inside their stories. When they don’t have enoughspace like… you know write a caret and write it on that little line but there is not really enoughspace now it will be squished. Can I show you a different way to do it? you need real setup for it.Well I want you to do here is, I want you to make an asterisk. Do you know what I’m talking about asterisks,it’s kind of like a star. I’ll show you how we do it. You put an X, exactly. That asterisk is going to tell your reader; oops I want to tell you something else. Then what you do is on this page you put another asterisk right there.Alright,so when your reader is reading it, this is what it’s going to sound like.I almost fell over the pool and in the water, I thoughtI was going to fall in the water, whatever you were thinking you know how to finish that right now it’s going show youhow it feels, how it sounds, but I was safe for few minutes.Do you see how you’re stretching out the middle of the your story that’s so smart.Kirsten Shultz(ph) As far as individual students I’m keeping in mind Mia(ph) is one. She’s been having ahard time getting started. She need to push to see that she does have stories.Okay, well let’s see, let’s review.Mia My aunt didn’t come for…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Okay, so one day your aunt didn’t come over. You know what this is not okay, you must smarter thanthis, I can’t believe your wasting time. You haven’t written anything.Where could you put the books? Quickly…you’re saying you can’t find the problem, well what is your problem?Mia That she didn’t come over.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Because she didn’t come over and what elsewas the problem? What was your problem?
Mia That shepromised me on the phone that she would come…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) So she kept telling you that shewould come and you kept thinking that she would come.
Mia But then…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) But she never did…she tends to be depend on me and I want her to encourage her to be more independent…So you did it, you have the problem, you know what you’re doing.Okay and then finally your problem get solved because what happens?
Mia Because then she comes.Kirsten Shultz(ph) Then she comes.
Mia On the school, Tuesday.KirstenShultz(ph) Right, there is also Bilal, Bilal has been struggling to put words down. He does a great job tellingstories through his pictures and orally, but really struggles with the print work and hearing sounds.Bilal I thought to put…put rubber right on my dog,so I got the boneand I put it on my back…my dog’s back but…Kirsten Shultz(ph) But he…

Bilal …tried to bite it off and I…Kirsten Shultz(ph) Gave.
Bilal …gave hima new a…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Different…
Bilal …different name.Kirsten Shultz(ph) So when you are deciding to put it on his back what were you thinking? What were you thinking when you tried to get it off?
Bilal Funny, it’s going to be funny.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) You thought it would be funny.MarikaPáez In this lesson we decided we aren’t looking for every kid to try it. Only those who seemready. We also think about what it will look like when student show as they’ve got it.We aren’t looking for a lot of thinking one sentence is enough.AssessmentMarikaPáez How did it go?
Kirsten Shultz(ph) It went okay, the reading lesson I think, you know my teaching I think went really well.
MarikaPáez Ah… Huh…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) We seem to get it when we’re on that.MarikaPáez After we teach our classes, Kristen and I discuss how our lesson went. Did they get it?What did we find out that helps us find our next steps?
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Some of them really got like Brandonreally got it.
MarikaPáez Hmm… Hmm.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Um… you know he said oh when I thought, you know when added that thinking and…MarikaPáez Right, did you get them think time?
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Yes.
MarikaPáez Before they turned.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Yeah, we sat and we you knowthey thought about, I haven’t got the interesting moment in your mind.
MarikaPáez Right.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) And then think that…MarikaPáez Right.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) what you were thinking at that moment.
MarikaPáez Right, what I found that I had to do a lot of couching into it duringthat part too, so like when the kids turned…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Right.
MarikaPáez I had to be listening and thenthey were telling their story and telling their problems, then I’d have to prompt them on what did you think. How did the management go? What are the tables monitors passing…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) That went pretty well,um… there were a couple of issues with, um… Terry and Janel(ph) throughout the whole lesson of independent time.MarikaPáez Hmm… Hmm.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Where they were kind of feeding of each other and it never really gotworking and then kind of distracted some of the other kids around them. So that was hard when I wasconferencing with some of the kids.
MarikaPáez Right, right. It’s always so hard when your conferencing with onekid that you don’t want your attention away form that one kid where the same time thewhole causing to feel like you’re watching that. And might be a time well like anothersit down with the kids and just to remind them this is, you know conference are importantand this is your job during writing time and this is my job to meet with kids. And I cant’ do myjob if you don’t do yours. So that’s like a possible next lesson.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Hmm… Hmm.MarikaPáez Did you see any other possible next mini lessons and…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) I think onething that I’ve noticed is some of children especially Mia and Kittia have a hardtime, both of them said to me while they’re writing that, I don’t think my storyhas a problem…

MarikaPáez Ah… huh.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Where I don’t get how it’s a problem.
MarikaPáez Hmm… Hmm.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) And both of themhave problems, they’re just not dramatic problems like Donald Crews where they’re getting hit by a train.MarikaPáez Right.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) So, I like to want to try a lesson and I’m not sure how it would lookabout, you know getting in to recognize, their problems don’t have to be crisis.MarikaPáez Right how are your conferences?
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Um…MarikaPáez In those kids we talked about before.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Well Bilal I worked with firstand so I talked a little bit about, you know the moment and what he was thinking. And once he finally you know told me, I showed him how to use asterisk to add it in.MarikaPáez Hmm… hmm. You know that came up in my conference too, or a couple of my conferencesthat strategy of inserting in the middle of your story, you can add things to the middle. I… I’m excited about it…Kirsten Shultz(ph) Right.
MarikaPáez …because it means the kids are really starting to revise, you know their not just writing and saying I’m done. You know their writing and then their saying maybe I could change this and they are starting to see that is a possibilitythat’s totally part of the standards and I’m really excited to see like some of the kids starting to do that.Kirsten Shultz(ph) Right.
MarikaPáez I feel like the kids that I talk to,um… were really receptive to the strategies like I talk to Taiwan(ph) about adding in histhinking sort of in the middle of his edge of your seat moment.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Hmm… hmm.
MarikaPáez Um… He surprised me by some of thestuff that he was doing, because I haven’t conference with him in a while.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Hmm… hmm.
MarikaPáez And so as they’re excited about some of the stuffthat he had been doing on his own like naming characters and um… he was going back and insertingfeelings that people had in the story and stuff. That was really sophisticated stuff,so next step is what we’re going to do tomorrow?Kirsten Shultz(ph) Um… I’m turned between two things, um… talking to themabout stretching out in different ways, because I think some of the kids need that.
MarikaPáez Hmm… hmm.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Um… And between like atrouble-shooting lesson on the management stuff.
MarikaPáez Right, the management part is so important.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) So in the entirely because I feel…it’s so important, but I know that I can’t roll with this writing, so it’s hard to figure out.
MarikaPáez Right, right.Kirsten Shultz(ph) So, I’m going to have to figure out which one.
MarikaPáez Right, I’m definitely gonna keep going with thestretching out…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Hmm… hmm.
MarikaPáez …at this, at your seat moment.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Alright.
MarikaPáez It’s hard for me to know if Ishouldn’t move on, um… or do the same lesson againjust in a different way so maybe I’ll do maybe adding… adding dialog and then…Kirsten Shultz(ph) Maybe you could cycle back to, you know do like dialog or action…
MarikaPáez Yeah, cycle back. Hmm… hmm.Kirsten Shultz(ph) …and then go back and do thinking again.
MarikaPáezThinking again, yeah. I probably do that, actually that’s good.I feel strategic planning has increased my knowledge and my ability to articulatethe big ideas about how students learn to read and write… That’s great thinking. What aboutyou Christine? My planning was once pretty (inaudible). If you’d entered into my classroomtwo or three years ago, you might not have seen as effective instruction as you see today.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) That chart and share with your partner. When I don’t plan the children can sense it, it may not be a disaster, but it’sdefinitely not going to be as crisp and smooth as I would like it. Strategic planning definitely increases ourconfidence and it make sure instruction more explicit and focused.
MarikaPáez Planning together is also providedme with a supportive environment. That enabled me to improve and transform my reading and writing instruction.Time spend talking to learning from and planning with colleague is the best way tobe the best teacher you can be.A Presentation of Teachers Network “Strategic Planning” Producer – Writer – Director Carole Rosen Associate Producer Jennifer Wollan Camera – Editor Alex Rappoport Sound Alex Sulilvan Gaffer Paul Kloss Special Thanks Future Leaders Institute Marika’s 2nd Grade Class Kirsten’s 2nd Grade Class Successful Teaching Practices in Action Strategic PlanningMarikaPáez My name is MarikaPáez and I teach 2nd grade in West Harlem, New York.Kirsten Shultz(ph) My name is Kirsten Shultz, I also teach 2nd grade in the same school as Marika.MarikaPáez Planning for our students is crucially important for us, it’s fundamental to a successful teaching practice.Carefully planning the steps you’ll take towards your objectives is one way to make sureyou get there.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Planning makes my teaching clear for both my students and myself.I walk into and away from the lessons knowing what I taught and how it went so to the kids.MarikaPáez Since Kristen and I teach in the same school, we plan together. Planning with two people is basicallytwice as effective as planning alone. You have someone else to help you point out possible glitches in thelessons and to help you find new ways to present material.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) We can bounce ideas ofeach other. We can question each other and we can help each other envision what the lesson will look like.SettingGoalsMarikaPáez We start our planningby deciding what to teach and what our goal are for our students. This is awriting lesson, I was looking at the standards book to see like what kinds of stuff they talk about,um… in terms of story telling, innovative writing and they talk about, ah… I thought this would be aninteresting one to do develop internal events as well as external ones.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Hmm… hmm.MarikaPáez Like not only telling what happen but also like what the character thinking about, wondering about. The student have been working in their writing on telling true stories from their lives in a way that keeps thereader on the edge of his or her seat. Now we want to teach the students how to stretch outthis edge of your seat moment and their stories by adding what characters are thinking at that moment. We’ve been working on like focusing our stories and just trying to tellabout one moment, we talk about the lessons that came before this one and where we think the students arein their writing ability. We did a couple of days of focusing our stories and couple day ofstories… day’s of story telling and the kids are getting really good at like, at knowing that they need to put thatproblem in their stories and getting their stories like really exciting and building up to that moment. How’s it going for you guys? How are you doing this?
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Yeah, we just, um… yesterday and the day before working on, you know getting that problemout at the beginning of the story and then building up yesterday the kids really got the idea of you knowlike getting that like excitement going for the reader.
MarikaPáez So like looking at their writing andjust figuring out like next steps, good next steps for them, I want them to startsort of stretching out that moment because lot of them are just having, oh an excitingmoment and then they its solved. How do you know! So I’m sure you got the same thing.Next we ask ourselves how we should the lesson?InstructionalDeliveryMarikaPáez I was conferencing of Christian about his story. You know he wasn’t sure what he want to do with his story, but he kind to want to add moreand instead adding more to the end, I was talking to him about, oh you could add in it, what were youthinking when you’re waiting. In writing we often use modeling. A good writing samplefrom a student or possibly a picture book to show what good writers do. Oh so likethis is like where he is saying what they’re thinking.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Right.MarikaPáez Okay that’s good, I might… I might did it will be too much, because I don’t want the lesson to be too long but…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Right.MarikaPáez Maybe to go through this quickly not read the whole story but just use these two pages to show what he doesand then do you think I should maybe use like one of the kids were pieces or two of the kids is an example?Kirsten Shultz(ph) Our priority is to use one.

MarikaPáez Okay.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) You know just to, I mean that’s what I would think justbecause I know about my kids, if I keep them on the road too long, you know. I want them to just get theidea and go and try it…
MarikaPáez Right, right okay.
Kirsten’s 2nd Grade Class
Kirsten Shultz(ph) So writers you have beenworking so hard all week writing true stories from you lives that haveproblems in them, you’ve been working on building them up that edge of your seatmoment, right. Well I want to show you today a way that good writers keep theirreaders on the edge of the seat for longer, okay. One way the dothat is by writing and showing what their character was thinkingat that moment and I want to show you how our expectDonald Crews does it in the book Shortcuts. So I’m going to go right to the edge of your seatmoment where they hear the train, alright. As if everybody stopped, everybody listened, we all heard the train whistle, should we run ahead to the pathhome or back to the cutoff. See how Donald Crews,he tells you what they are thinking right at the moment at that edge of your seat moment.Marika’s 2nd Grade Class
MarikaPáez I want to show you how Christine tried it.when Christine was writing the story some of you mightremember from his share about how he is waiting for his mom to get the food out of the oven. And this is what he says, “one day my mother made me dinner and she had to put in the oven… she had toput in the oven, so it can cook. Then it took so long, so Iplay with my skateboard then I switched to my scooter, I switched to the TV”and then listened what he does, “Then I thought about how will ittaste when it was done. I thought would it be delicious or spicy”so he is writing what he is thinking and stretching out that moment when he iswaiting and waiting for his mom to make the food and that’s what I want you to try today.ManagementMarikaPáez Throughout the process we’re always coming back to management,it’s always at the forefront of our talk. Once special management consideration we have with thislesson is the active engagement. That is kids turning to talk to each other. So they could like turn to their partners.Kirsten Shultz(ph) Hmm… hmm. And then…
MarikaPáez Well maybe lets haven’t think first.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) Think for a minute and then they have to think back towhat they were thinking at that moment.
MarikaPáez Alright.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) You kind of like remember in your mindwhat you were thinking at that really excited moment, you know at the edge of your seat moment.MarikaPáez And then…
Kirsten Shultz(ph) And then turn and share with your partner.
MarikaPáez So right now what I want you to do is, I want you tothink about your story, the story that your working on and think about what the edge of your seat moment is.And what you were thinking at that moment.I’m going to give you a couple of seconds to think about it before you turn to your partner. Think about what you were thinking at the edge of your seat moment.Kirsten Shultz(ph) Think what you were thinking.Alright and now if youknow what you were thinking you can remember what you were thinking at that edge of your seat moment. I want you toturn to your partner and tell them the edge of your seat moment and what it was the youwerethinking right then.
My edge of myseat moment was when, was when, I was going tomy, my cousins house up state and when on the waythe train stopped and I thought that the train was never going…keep on going.
I fell out my bed and I startedcrying, so my mother got me because she has heard my head… she heard my headhit the floor.

Mia I’m going to write about when my aunty didn’t come onlike, for like, like three weeks that passed,um… when my aunty didn’t come on Tuesday I was sosad that I started like stamping my feet and asking my mom why didshe not come and she kept saying no she is not coming.
I swim the other dayand then, and then I went to (inaudible) and thenI went to our home. I went back outsideand then I started playing in the pool.
The problem in my story was, whenI went to sisters school and pigeon pulled on myjacketandthen I got so humiliated, I did want nobody see and then went on to go tomy sisters school in the morning. it made me feel like so humiliated,I just want to go somewhere were nobody will see and I could be left alone by myself.MarikaPáez How many kids thinks they’ll try today to write and some of the thinking that they weredoing during the edge of their seat moments. A lot of kids are going to try it today, okayhands down, I can’t wait to see what you trying and how you make you writing great today. When I call your table would you walk quietly to a table and get started on your writing.Okay, I’m looking for ready buddies. Kirsten and I talk about different way to getthe kids off the rug, in order to start their writing by the way.I have students folders already set out on their tables so the kids can get writing as soon as they sit down.Kirsten sends the table monitors to pass outtheir writing folders when her kids are ready to write.
Kirsten Shultz(ph) And Jeylans(ph) table, go aheadeverybody let’s sit at Jeylans(ph) table can go ahead and get to work.
