PowerPivot is an add-in for Microsoft Excel that allows the user to efficiently query stored data from multiple sources. Some of the data sources that can be imported into PowerPivot include Excel spreadsheets, text files, Access databases, and websites (Winston, 2014, p. 455). One of the major benefits of PowerPivot is that there is essentially no limitation on the amount of data that can be imported. For example, with Excel there is a strict limit on how many rows of data can be included on a given sheet. With PowerPivot, however, millions of rows of data can be used, which is fantastic for large companies and/or extremely complex problems. PowerPivot is easily run in Excel. Once you have identified the data you wish to use, select the PowerPivot tab (make sure that you have first enabled the add-in from the main menu), and begin importing your data. For example, to import data from Excel spreadsheets or text files, you would need to select “From Other Sources,” and to import data from an Access database you would need to select “From Database.” Once you have established how the data is organized (for example, if there are headers included in the data you are importing), simply click Finish and then Close and the data will be quickly imported into PowerPivot. Once all of the data you need has been imported, you can use the PowerPivot Design tab to help create relationships with the data and these relationships will help the user to analyze the data as needed.
