Topic: This module/week you have had the opportunity to watch the movie Fireproof in order to better understand the EMC equation (Identified Needs + Intentional Resourcing = Enlarging the Conversation). Through the lens of our course materials, explore the interpersonal communication concepts you identified in the movie. For example, did you find a degenerative communication spiral? What role did self- disclosure play? How was identity revealed? (Christine) The movie Fireproof had a lot of emotions and confusion if you didn’t follow along well in the movie. This movie was about a couple who struggled to understand each other and failed to communicate at all. Caleb and Catherine always had problems knowing what each other really wanted and it created a poor communication. In Peterson it states, “Such frustration and isolation may be reason enough to sort out better intimacy-producing skills (Peterson, 2007, pg. 22). Caleb and Catherine struggled so much and there was no self-disclosure. This is why the relationship ended up being rocky. When Caleb was given the challenge by his father, Catherine would see things lie he was doing good things on purpose to make her upset. In reality Caleb was testing to see if she would see past the anger and see that he was trying to get closer to her. Caleb wanted to give up because to Catherine the good was bad and it didn’t seem to sink in to her that he was trying to pull her back so that they could be united as one again. The events taking place around us and the meaning of other people’s behavior are often ambiguous, open to many different interpretations (Stewart, 2012, pg. 213). Many times what Caleb was doing, Catherine would grasp it a different way. The day Caleb gave up trying to win her but yet helped her because she was his wife that’s when Catherine realized that he wasn’t being selfish or that he was only looking out for himself but that he was there to help her and not push her away. Once Caleb became close to God and believed in him everything fell into place and Catherine was very appreciated of him. Word Count: 293 References: Peterson, J. C. (2007).
